SELLING THE FIREBALL - GEORGE BUSH AND IRAN | Medialens, 6/25/08, with a sequel

If you want a specific, case-by-case demonstration of how the propaganda system works, read Medialens religiously. What follows is one textbook example of some moment:
When George Bush arrived in Britain last week as part of his "farewell tour", the real reasons for the visit were buried well out of sight. The tour was not, as the Guardian suggested, a mere "continental au revoir". The purpose was to coerce Gordon Brown into raising troop levels in Afghanistan and to support toughened sanctions on Iran. Bush said pressure on Iran was necessary to "solve this problem diplomatically", but warned: "Iranians must understand, however, that all options are on the table." (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/ uk_news/politics/7456081.stm)

The remarks raised fears in London that Bush is "determined to take action against Iran before he leaves office in January," the Independent reported. (http://www.independent.co.uk/ news/world/politics/bush-threatens-i…

ANARCHISM

Pierre Joseph Proudhon famously declared “property is theft”. And perhaps more surprisingly that “Anarchy is order”. Speaking in 1840, he was the first self-proclaimed anarchist. Anarchy comes from the Greek word “anarchos”, meaning “without rulers”, and the movement draws on the ideas of philosophers like William Godwin and John Locke. It is also prominent in Taoism, Buddhism and other religions. In Christianity, for example, St Paul said there is no authority except God.

The anarchist rejection of a ruling class inspired communist thinkers too. Peter Kropotkin, a Russian prince and leading anarcho-communist, led this rousing cry in 1897: “Either the State for ever, crushing individual and local life... Or the destruction of States and new life starting again.. on the principle…

It's a Slippery Slope to War: Ask Your Rep to Oppose H. Con. Res. 362

Please forward widely.Dear Doug, The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a new resolution that could effectively demand a blockade against Iran -- an act that would be widely seen as an act of war and could invite Iranian retaliation, possibly leading us into a shooting war. Over the last three weeks, 77 House Democrats and 92 Republicans have agreed to cosponsor this resolution, but we think many do not realize its dangerous implications. This resolution (H. Con. Res. 362) was introduced by Representative Gary Ackerman. The most alarming provision "demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and…

Take Action: Votes on Military Aid to Israel Coming Soon

We’ve just learned that the House and Senate committees which have jurisdiction over foreign aid will be voting soon on military aid to Israel for FY2009.The House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs will “mark-up” the foreign aid bill on July 16 and 17, respectively, which includes the President’s request for $2.55 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) for Israel.Since the United States and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in August 2007 to increase military aid to $30 billion over the next decade, together we’ve done a lot of good work to challenge military aid to Israel; however, we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and do a lot more in order to get it cut off.Even though Hamas and Israel agreed upon a truce last week, Israel continues to use U.S. weapons everyday to enforce a brutal and illegal military occupation and siege on Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, in violation of…
