UNESCO-NHK Heritage Images Archive Initiative (English)

Through the Heritage Images Archives Initiative, NHK and UNESCO are contributing to the documenting and safeguarding of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and of natural heritage, in order to ensure transmission of knowledge between generations and promote cultural diversity. The partnership between UNESCO and NHK Japanese broadcasting corporation builds on state-of-the-art digital visual and sound processing technologies for the production of short digital TV documentaries on Heritage using Hi-Vision technology as well as quality 3-D moving images and reconstruction images related to the World Heritage Sites. These videos have been edited and adapted by UNESCO especially for online access.

See here for a list of all videos, which is approaching 200.

Maureen Dowd: Epic Idiot

With notes from yours truly below. I labelled this "Torture" because that's what it's like reading this fuzzball of a "thinker":
April 5, 2009 OP-ED COLUMNIST The First ShrinkBy MAUREEN DOWD Barack Obama grew up learning how to slip in and out of different worlds — black and white, foreign and American, rich and poor. The son of an anthropologist, he developed a lot of “tricks,” as he put it, training himself to be a close observer of human nature, figuring out what others needed so he could get where he wanted to go. [Evidence? I mean, even for an op-ed, this is silly. Did his mostly absent father somehow transmit the "anthropologist gene" to his son?]
He was able to banish any fear in older white folk that he was an angry young black man — with smiles, courtesy and, as he wrote in his memoir, “no sudden moves.” He learned negotiating skills as a community organizer and was able to ascend to the presidency of the Harvard Law Review by letting a dispara…

Psalm 2.0: The Reset

1 The PRESIDENT is my shepherd; I am his font.

2 He maketh me lie down after unseen capture: he leadeth me under the still-running waters.

3 He restoreth my role: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valleys of FATA and Swat, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy Chiefs of Staff, they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a fable for me about the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my tank runneth over.

6 Surely potions of Circe shall wallow me all the days of thy term: but I will resell the myth of OBAMA for ever.

These are evil people. And we're not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek. If it hadn&…

Exposing the Kleptocracy: Moyers Interviews William K. Black

Blurb:
The financial industry brought the economy to its knees, but how did they get away with it? With the nation wondering how to hold the bankers accountable, Bill Moyers sits down with William K. Black, the former senior regulator who cracked down on banks during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. Black offers his analysis of what went wrong and his critique of the bailout.

Chris Hedges, "Resist or Become Serfs"

Posted on Apr 6, 2009America is devolving into a third-world nation. And if we do not immediately halt our elite’s rapacious looting of the public treasury we will be left with trillions in debts, which can never be repaid, and widespread human misery which we will be helpless to ameliorate. Our anemic democracy will be replaced with a robust national police state. The elite will withdraw into heavily guarded gated communities where they will have access to security, goods and services that cannot be afforded by the rest of us. Tens of millions of people, brutally controlled, will live in perpetual poverty. This is the inevitable result of unchecked corporate capitalism. The stimulus and bailout plans are not about saving us. They are about saving them. We can resist, which means street protests, disruptions of the system and demonstrations, or become serfs. We have been in a steady economic decline for decades. The Canadian political philosopher John Ralston Saul detailed this declin…
